Making hand washing fun for the classroom!

There is no way around it, our kiddos are notorious for having germy little fingers.  Unfortunately, while they are at school, they are less likely to wash or sanitize their hands after using the restroom, before lunch, and after recess….. Perhaps it is because they don’t have us there to nag.  If you think about it, students spend the entire day in such close proximity and when you have at least half of them not washing their hands throughout the day,  it’s no wonder why student lose nearly 22 million days of school per year.

As parents, we are constantly staying on top of clean hygiene with our own little ones but I couldn’t imagine trying to stay on top of entire classroom of kids.  It’s time to come together as parents, teachers, and staff to start promoting healthy hand washing habits to reduce the spread of these nasty germs that spread like a wildfire among these children. Here are a few fun activities that teachers and school staff can use to start getting students excited about washing their hands:

Coloring and Activity Projects
Allow the kids have a little fun during this lesson, it will keep them entertained and they will also get the visual of the importance of keeping germs away.  Here is a link to “Henry the Hand” free printable coloring and activity book.  This is a great start!

Explore the Campus
Set aside 15 minute out of the day to take the class to different sink locations throughout the campus.  The kids will look forward to not only taking a break from their school work but you will have them excited to explore the different areas of their campus…. Just another simple fun way to get them into the habit of washing their hands.

Reward
Encourage clean hand washing habits by coming up with a reward system.  Use a chart that they can earn stickers after they practice their good habits. Once they fill their card, offer fun incentives, such as a prize out of the “mystery box”, a homework pass, wear your favorite hat day, etc.  Be as creative as you would like, kids will love earning their rewards!

Oh my, glitter
Glitter is a great way to show the kids how much effort you should use to properly remove germs.  Since we cannot see germs, using glitter to symbolize germs will allow them to see the different techniques that are used to remove all “glittery germs”….. Let them try different variations of the process, warm vs. cold water, soap vs. no soap, etc.  This will allow them to see which method works best for germ removal.

This is a great start to keeping our kids healthy and showing that healthy practices can be fun. The more we encourage our kids/students to be enthusiastic over keeping their hands clean, the more likely they will keep germ-free hands and that will reduce the illnesses spreading in the classrooms.

Spring Cleaning isn’t just for your home, it is essential to bring the same tradition to your work space!  We spend so much of our time at the office and I am constantly writing about the positive aspects of clean and organized surroundings.  Not only are you more productive while your surroundings are clean and organized but it also enhances the health of you and your colleagues.  Here are a few simple tips and a checklist to make Spring Cleaning your office a little easier.

Don’t overwhelm yourself:

Start small with a plan in place.  No matter the size of your office, dedicating a certain amount of time per day to complete the items on your check-off list will contribute to getting the entire job done.

Avoid clutter:

Keep only the essentials that you use throughout the day within arm’s reach; i.e. computer, pens, note pad, etc.  For the items that aren’t used as often, keep them close by in your drawer…… Of course this means it’s time to clean out and organize your drawers as well!! Stop using your drawers as an “out of sight, out of mind” filing system, it’s inefficient.  If there are things cluttering up your office that you simply never use or you don’t need, get rid of it because it makes a significant difference when you have plenty room to work.

Digitally clean

Cleaning out your digital clutter is essential— the more organized your computer/files are, the easier it will be for you to find what you need and be more efficient. From updating contacts, making sure you are operating on the latest software upgrades, uninstalling programs that you do not use, organizing your documents that you’ll need again to the cloud or memory stick and trashing or archiving the rest, to deleting/sorting emails.  Spring comes once a year, and thank goodness so does digital spring cleaning.

Keep it going:

Find the time to keep up the CLEAN!  Once you finally get your office cleaned and organized, take the time to keep it up by creating a checklist that you can stick to throughout the year and spend the last few minutes of the day putting things away so you are ready to walk in the next morning to start your day with a fresh clean beginning.

Your cleaning company can take care of the rest, but take extra responsibility for the personal and shared spaces you use on a day-to-day basis. Keeping your office clean and organized will not only help you stay sane and on track, but most importantly, it will keep your productivity level high.

As a child, I would have never thought that I would be in the janitorial industry, but it has truly turned into my passion and I love it.  I have always felt that when our surroundings are clean and organized, we are more clear, creative and efficient in our productivity in whichever environment you are in.  So how do we implement this into our children, our future because I can’t tell you how many times I found myself doing the things around the house just to get it done faster.  Eventually there came a time that I realized you have to give your kids these chores to implement these valuable lessons that they will use throughout their lives.  When children help out with daily chores, not only will it help with their growth development but it gives them a sense of belonging within the family.

So, how do we steer our children into the right direction with finding the value of tidiness?!?!?  I have lined out some tips that I hope you find useful.

  • Start young and make it fun.  Kids need to know at a young age that they are responsible for their belongings and surroundings and they should be praised when they are taking good care of their things. So even though it is a chore and it must be done, try to make cleaning fun for your kids.  Try to be creative while they are young by inventing a game, a song, or a silly dance to try to make it a tad more enjoyable for them, this is a great way to show them that responsibilities are necessary and can be approached with a positive manner.

  • Once you start teaching your children chores around the house, make sure you teach them that they need to take care of “their” responsibilities. Kids need to understand that they are not “helping” you, they need to know that it’s their toys that need to be picked up, it is their bed that needs to be made and it’s their clothes that need to make it into the laundry. This isn’t mommy’s job, mommy works hard to maintain the household as it is!  Remember, it is their job and their responsibility and this certainly need to be taught early on.

  • Make sure they know the rules and instructions. Kids don’t come into this world with a toilet bowl brush in one hand and cleaner in the other hand.  It’s your job as a parent to teach your children not only how to clean, but how to be responsible.  Create easy steps that your child can understand for each chore task.  If they are really young, take photos of the sequence that you want them to follow.  You can even make it fun by turning it into a project and let them help you as you explain how to do the job.

  • Be realistic and remember they are still kids!  Assign jobs that a child is capable of doing with success according to their age because kids love to impress you.  When they are doing a good job of their capable chores, they will push harder when they see you constantly praising them. So limit cleaning sessions to short bursts at first because you want to set them up for success.  These early lessons of responsibility will reflect in your children in time, be patient.

Chore Chart.  This is my happy zone… It’s organized, planned and perfected!   Create a chore chart and have it displayed where it will be seen regularly. You can rotate weeks, pull chores from a jar, whatever works for your family.  Set weekly goals and incentives for all of the chores at the end of the week, have a reward for all the completed chores that they were able to accomplish. When children are older, apply this method to allowances.

Never stop praising! I cannot say this enough, kid’s love and thrive on praise.  When they successfully accomplish a task, praise them like crazy but if they weren’t able to complete the chore to satisfaction, figure out why and walk them through the steps to figure out why. Were the instructions not clear? Was the job unrealistic? Or did the child not give their 100% to do the job? Figure out where they fell short so you can guide them in a positive direction.

Being in this business, I know one thing is for sure, it doesn’t matter what age you are or who you clean for, everyone deserves to know that they are appreciated for the cleaning they do.

We all at SanServe Janitorial love this time of the year!  Now that we see the weather dropping into low numbers, I think it’s safe to say that we are ready to start pulling out the sweaters, drinking that long awaited Starbucks pumpkin spice latte while breaking out your fall décor……. Yes, autumn has arrived in Southeast Texas. As we start ramping up for our colder months, this is always a good time to start inspecting your office building for any maintenance issues before the winter months.  SanServe Janitorial wants you and your facility to be prepared to help with an easy spring cleaning and to keep cost down during the cold month to come.

 – To keep your and your employees cozy by maintaining a comfortable temperature without making your heat bill sky rocket during the winter.   First, check all the doors and windows to make sure the weather strips and seals do not need to be replaced.  The cost to replace the seal or weather strips does not even come close to the cost of your energy bill!  Another great way (our favorite) to keep the warm in is to embrace the sunlight!  Not only will this help you kick the winter blues, it will also add natural warmth by letting the warm light beams in.  So open all of those blinds and pull back those curtains this winter!

 – Make sure your gutters are clear and free of any debris. Leaves, stems and other objects will end up clogging the downspouts which will can create the water to flow over into the foundation of your building or roof. This water buildup often leads to mold and usually rot, which is such an expensive repair especially when it is so easy to avoid this from occurring by being prepared.

– Check to see you are in need of replacing any of your window screens.  Take them down during winter to avoid the harsh winter conditions, replace the ones that are in need and clean the rest of them with soap and warm water. You can keep your screens in good condition, extending their usage by following these steps with and storing them in trash bags so they can remain clean throughout the winter.

Following these tips will not only keep your employees happy but will also keep your wallet happy!!!

There is nothing better than walking into you place of business and feeling like you are at home!  If you think about it, you spend 40+ hours a week at work and we know how important it is to make your office setting inspiring as possible.  SanServe Janitorial would like to share a few tips to transform your office into an inviting place for your customers and colleagues:

First Impressions: You know what they say, first impressions can make or break you!  You only have one opportunity to make a first impression with a customer or a perspective client, whether it comes from a phone call or when they walk into your place of business.  Take a moment to walk through the doors that your customers would first walk through, does it express the level of
professionalism, organization, and cleanliness?  Putting your best foot forward in your lobby is the key to making a positive first impression.

Front Desk: The reception desk should always remain uncluttered and clean. Limit the items on the front desk and try not to have any too many decorations, you certainly do not want to take focus away from the person who greets your guest, hopefully with a nice smile as well!

Must Haves: We have all been there before, you find yourself in need of something in the middle of your work day.  It might just be a tissue, nail file or some Advil to relieve that pounding headache!!  Either way, having some the essentials on hand for employees or customers is a great way to show them that you are willing to go above and beyond for them, it’s extremely hospitable. So be sure to stock up on items such as pens/pencils, mints or candies, safety pins, hand sanitizer or lotion, nail files, First Aid Kit and plenty pain reliever!

Bathrooms: We all can appreciate a clean, well-stocked bathroom!  You must go beyond covering up the smells of a restroom, it must be cleaned and sanitized properly and there should never be a smell. SanServe Janitorial uses highly effective cleaners and plenty elbow grease to clean your restrooms. Honestly, your restroom shouldn't smell any different than your office, adding a light fragrance is always a plus as well!

These are extremely simple tips that can help you transform into a more comfortable place for your employees, guests and most importantly, yourself!  For more information on keeping your facility looking its best, Call SanServe Janitorial for a free quote 1-800-274-8464
